Being present and accounted for at Village View

In our infinite wisdom, parents always believe they know what is best for the child. Nowhere is this more evident than our tacit approval of the clampdown that has taken place at Village View in the past two years. I applauded it initially, given the lack of parental rules which allowed easy access to all areas of the school, sniveling school district support of "No child left behind", blind eyes toward teachers lacking the tools or the understanding of how to inspire children, and the willingness to subvert the quality of education in the mad rush to secure extra state and federal funds.

I never advocated a total lock down of the school, which is having an adverse effect on the kids. That has happened, however, and kids are no longer being allowed to retain the essence that makes them children in the first place. Suddenly, we have children coming home with unhealthy anxiety, concern, mood swings, generalized fear, comments about their teachers that we cannot ignore, and a general unhappiness that should not be prevalent in a place of learning.

The teachers themselves, some already suspected to be complicit in the effort to assist the increase in school visibility for the state and federal educators, are mostly reduced to robotic procurement devices, with little to inspire children. Certainly there are exceptions, but a recent school assembly to present student awards illustrated how teachers who are most able to connect with their students can quickly lose faith in their own core inspirational beliefs.

Witness the changes that have taken place, no longer in subtle fashion, before, during and after school. The children no longer have fun. Laughter has been replaced with silence. This place of learning has turned into the rule equivalent of an armed camp. Bells ring, and kids are frozen in place. At lunch, kids eat looking straight ahead, and do not turn toward others behind them. Orchestrating this is Aaron Jetzer, replacement for a deer in the headlights style principal who was beloved, but unable to effect any changes that brought the school into the new century.

This oversight has extended to parents as well, as we are subject to police radar on Sisson while driving our children to school, special parking places for parents that have paid for the privilege, holding parents captive for chastisement by the principal at awards assemblies for our children, while highlighting our apparently mediocre efforts to give our children a broad social experience by including them in after school activities. There is a lack of effort by our school to increase the quality of the food that the children can purchase at lunch, lack of effort to create an environment of childlike curiosity that should be a driving focus of the school itself, and lack of effort to act as the catalyst for the furthering of the Village view community.

What I do see, is a sense of entitlement on the part of many parents here. I see parents who display that sense of entitlement in the school parking lot, at assemblies, and at poorly orchestrated events supposedly for the betterment of the children. I see few leaders, creators of community, or those who understand children beyond their own selfish interests. I see exclusion by certain factions of the PTA. I see protection on the part of the school for teachers who do not provide any inspiration to our children. I see anxiety in the eyes of many students, less concerned about learning and more concerned about being held back. I see a blatant attempt by the school and the district to lure more funds without generating an environment of curiosity that would allow for greater development of our children at this level.

I suppose this should encourage some who like this rather Orwellian view of our school. With all the controls in place though, we may end up failing ourselves, even as we believe we know what is best of our children.

  1. well its about f#$%@#g time at least i know im not alone in how i feel about whats happened to our wonderful little school. i on the other hand am not worried about attaching my full name to my comment - Tonja Todd - and also i would just like to say that we are trying to get our child out of village view and into another school if that dosent happen we will be home schooling . i will not go thru another year of my child getting a gold sticker because she dosent "waste her time at lunch" cause she is soooo good she just eats and dosent talk at the table.

  2. Tonja, you are not alone in your consideration of other options for your child, including home schooling. Not only are your comments to the post compelling and honest, they will likely strike a chord with others who read this as well. Please share the blog with other Village View parents, since change will only happen if we push for it. The idea that we should keep silent as the school becomes a unhappy place for our kids is no option. I would be interested in which teachers you think are actually concerned about the students. There are some, thankfully.

  3. it may strike a chord but no one will do anything about jetzer the teachers are all to afraid to say anything to him cause he can fire them ( i dont blame them because he wont listen anyhow because ive tried ) and the whole no money in the school funds (dont get me started on that one) and sure ALOT of people on campus bitch bitch bitch but they all cover their faces no one really wants to be the one to stand up for the children and put a stop to all crap thats being shouveled around there everyone is waiting for someone else to fix the problem in the last two years i have watched jetzer humilate children at flag talk down to them as if they dont matter leave the most dribbeling messages on my answering machine take away play time and fun from them and take away morning play time from the kindergarteners i mean come on oh and one of my favorites was the no smokeing or playing with matches in the bathrooms speech he gave the 4th and 5th grade at the beginning of the year and of course my all time favorite phone call the no candy for valentines day(i save all my messages from him) because of all the obese children in the world today but a coupla weeks later we get the hey if you want to get your hands on a blizzard at movie night you better get there early cause when their gone their gone but thats okay cause we still have pop and candy for you to buy and the flyer that came home for box tops well get as many in as you can so your class can win an icecream party so im guessing what ever suits his mood when he feels like it i mean okay we want healthy kids and playing is good for them but he took some of that away and sweets are not good but they keep coming around so one of my next favorite moments was when my parents were visiting in feb this year it so happened that my daughter got an award well they were excited to go to the school and see this because they live in chicago and dont get to participate in this i was so embarrassed when he spent the first 15 minutes of the assembly chastiseing the 1st graders about knowing the difference between telling and tattling because too many of the kids are coming up to him at lunch and wasteing his time because they still dont know the difference between the two and its really important that they get it right at 6 years old anyhow to make a really long story short my father leaned over to me and said this guys an idiot he took a special moment with all those familys sitting there and knocked all those little kids down a coupla notches so that they know their "place" when it was supposed to be a spirit lifting assembly for all the kids to celebrate their friends or themselves getting an award for working hard and accomplishing something other than standing in line in the morning or not wasting their time at lunch socializing with their peers that school is no longer worth my time my effort my money we will finish the year and i will do everything in my power to help my teacher or any of the teachers with what ever they need and come june 17 we are outta there well maybe next year will be better for the familys that stay there good luck to them

  5. I am sick of Village View's militant approach to schooling. In my last parent teacher conferences all I got is what I'm supposed to do, not any solutions on what they may be able to do to resolve any issues. I was also told that perhaps my son needed to talk to my pediatrician, which meant put him on drugs because he can't stay in his seat and is not interested. Why? Perhaps you're boring him to death!! He's no longer milling around after we discussed it with him and he's drug free. Make kids freeze, suggest drugs, admonish parents and children at award ceremonies, etc. etc... Jetzer and his third reich of teachers need a sabatocal to do a little soul searching.

  7. I have been observing this development at a bit of a distance, since I have been working out of the home up until the last year and a half or so. I certainly agree with Absinthium that Anna Dreyfuss was not a strong principal. I had always been disappointed in the awards assemblies that she was satisfied with the test scores…which were often only 65%...and which she found “amazing.” I was very amazed too. I am sure many of us were. Aim low and receive the California Distinguished School plaque. I was not sad to see her go. I think the students were, and I believe her fairytale voice and dress were comforting to many of them. I was hoping a new face and new attitude might bring the school scores up, and draw our kids into the beginnings of greatness in a school to be envied – much like the HB we live in and love. I didn’t really believe my wife the first time she told me the kids could not play in the mornings anymore before school. I like to give everyone the benefit of the doubt (although the first time I heard AJ speak, he invited the dads to donut day because he said he could bond more with the men and discuss their kids without the women – yes he did say that). It is not what I have read today that has changed my mind, it’s more the stories I have heard from parents and indeed the interaction that I have seen firsthand between “Doctor J” and the kids during flag or awards ceremonies that has convinced me that he is not a good fit for our kids.
It so often happens that what seems to be a big uproar is really only a very few parents with loud voices. This produces no change and no progress. We as parents have to decide whether we want to do something about this or not. I think that there are plenty of avenues to pursue, but instead of a few loud and scattered voices, we have to be a strong enough group to do something and effect change. Perhaps Absinthium can give us a counter on the site of unique web visits, etc. Also an online signup sheet wouldn’t hurt. Is the number of upset parents high enough? Let’s really spread this site around, and not just to our VV community, but to parents at other schools as well. Let’s get a measure of how different Aaron’s philosophy is from the others. Perhaps many of you know already, but others of us don’t. At least some of us agree that he is part of the problem, perhaps he is not the root. Just because the District is turning a deaf ear doesn’t mean they condone his rules, it just means that they don’t care. And if it is their rules, it’s not Aaron’s fault that he carries the new spirit assassination policy with a smile. See? Everything’s fine! Maybe it’s our fault for still believing in happiness and liberty. Come on. Bow down, bear down, and ROW!
Mine is not a call to arms; rather a suggestion to consider how strong the will is among us. What is the goal, ousting a principal, or a superintendent? Or both? The answer cannot be ten families quietly going away. The answer is a hundred families taking back their kids’ ability to laugh out loud without fear of oppression.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I have spoken with others and there are clearly enough parents who would like to see some change. Hopefully, an aggregation of them here would provide a conduit to further this. Absinthium should look at the methods you mentioned for developing this more.

  9. Wow. I must be going to a different school. My kids love school and their teachers. They don't win awards often in the assemblies, but it is not because of the teachers. We need to all take responsiblity for our own children. The real world won't treat our children like a fragile piece of glass. I think the structure is what they need and the difference in change from Mrs. Dreyfus to Mr. Jetzer is a huge span and quick a shock. My thoughts: If you don't like it, leave. Our kids are getting an amazing education, for FREE. Go to private school and see what you get. You'll be back at public school in an instant. Try looking at the GOOD stuff, not all the negative!

    ReplyDelete
  10. My sense is that this is not all negative, though clearly there are sharp opinions regarding Village View.

It is most pleasing that your kids love their school and their teachers. If others do not share your view, are they automatically wrong? The suggestion that, "If you don't like it, leave." is rather divisive and does not suggest that you would consider divergent opinions on the matter of the Village View education. It does, however, sound a bit like you want this dialogue to end. As to comment about the education being FREE, perhaps there are those who can appreciate what could be considered a rather simplistic view.

    ReplyDelete
  11. My children also enjoy school, but that doesn't mean there isn't space for improvement. Children are supposed to like school. That is what we tell them and since they trust us, they do. This is why we have to be their voices. We are the parents, it's our job to make sure our children are given the education they deserve. Children learn the hard way through everyday life that people can be mean and cruel. This is why we teach them to not put up with a bully, and to think for themselves.( No, I'm not calling anyone a bully, it's just an example. )It's when they can't, is when we have to step up and speak for them. If we don't protect our fragile pieces of glass, someone will come along and sweep them under the carpet or put them in the trash. They have a few years left before they should have to learn about the real world. They are still very young.
I've had to deal with some issues I strongly disagree with. Issues to do with the new school policies. Children should not have lowered marks because of missed signatures for work that has been done and graded, or for not participating very much in class. Personalities are not taken into consideration. A child should be graded according to what they know and understand, scores and abilities.

As for FREE, well, nothing in this world is FREE! Don't you pay taxes?

  12. Anonymous.... I agree children do not need to be treated like a fragile pice of glass ; I know mine certainly are not , I also concede children do need structure (some apparently more than others) and for the most part my kids are very fond of their teachers as well . However Jetzer and many of the policies he has brought to Village View are not about structure they are about CONTROL . There is a big difference. I point this out to you because you seem to be either unaware or disconcerned about this obvious difference. Anyone that has seen this man at an assembly can testify to this. I would also question the AMAZING education you proclaim to be getting from the current bureaucracy . The present state of education these days is a lot of things but amazing ?Give it a rest your probably on the payroll : )
My children are not getting an amazing education and it is defiantly not free nothing in public life is ever “for free”. We pay Taxes . I am sure this was just an oversight on your part but it probably never acures to you that WE the tax payers actually pay Jetzers salary ;) When we remolded our home the School’s assessment added significant cost , how many homes over the last few years have gone through a remodel or addition in our track ? I have paid the increase in TAX so have many others. We also purchase along with everyone else every overpriced trinket that the kids are indoctrinated to sell , from pencils to peanut brittle. And still our concerns about the very real effects your “Structure” is having over our kids childhood ( one which values a system over Individual outcomes ) are being brushed aside by an annal principle with control issues.
The idea that some like minded parents and teachers with similar issues actually think that this is no big deal or worse yet an improvement... is disturbing to say the least. Anonymous your love it or leave commit demonstrates this point and is truly laughable.
I have lived in this track 20 years and I am going to leave the local school because some Draconian bureaucrat with contole issues is implementing a policies that are systematically robing the children of Village View of their liberty..... your nuts.
I choose to stay and fight for my kids. I think a little civil disobedience is in-order. No talking at lunch is a great place to start. I have given my kids back the liberty to speak their mind at lunch if they choose. They have earned it ! And if I get called in to the Commandant’s office because my child refused to tow the line ........well then it should make for a very rememberable object lesson for all those present .
And by the way Anonymous I do have a child in private school. It has been three years now . I am not quite sure how long an instant is but I am sure it is shorter than three years : )
Bottom line is there is plenty of good at Village View but its inflexibility and rigged control mechanisms are not part of the “good “. They are not needed or warranted for every child that sets foot at Village View with a desire to learn. Maybe some kids do “love” this type of control and need harsh systems to thrive. However, I have yet to met one that grew up to be a well adjusted adult . In fact they usually go into some type of public service like politics and try their very best to force others into the same misery and drudgery they find themselves in. And if they lack the charisma and oratory skills for politics well there is always School Administration. : p

  13. Why don't you get yourself to school and see what is really going on instead of spending your time blogging. The kids are aloud to speak at lunchtime, they just can't get out of control and yell. Nothing wrong with that when you have 600 kids together. Get your facts straight before you spout off.....

  15. Village View Involved ParentApril 21, 2009 at 3:21 PM

I have to say that I am quite shocked at the negativity towards Mr. Jetzer.
Our family has been at Village View for the last 5 years and we love it. Anna Dreyfuss was not at all a child advocate, she let the PTA delegate and rode the wave, did not want to ever have a confrontation or shake things up.
I think that Mr. Jetzer is a breath of fresh air, he is a child advocate and I see it everyday first hand. While you are complaning of no playground time think of complaining about the parents who drop there kids off at 8:00am with no supervision, they run, play get hurt and who's responsible? The school and the district and God forbid it be a serious injury then the district has a lawsuit.
Next if any of you want to see the child advocate side of Mr. Jetzer visit him at lunchtime when he's out on the field kicking the soccer ball while still be a administrator, or maybe you'll catch him on the basketball courts for a little game with the 4th and 5th graders. He is hands on and he genuinely cares about the well being of all the children at Village View. I will share something that is personal that might make some of you really revaluate your views.
I have a 1st grader at Village View who has struggled in school since pre-school, and this year it came to a head. My concerns were real and they sent me on a emotional roller coaster that I was not ready for. When I was approached by my child's teacher I went directly to Mr. Jetzer, without hesitation his door was open and he came up with a solution.
My child was being tested for a learning disability as well as medical assessments.
He was the meaning of "NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND"!!
On the day of the roundtable with Mr. Jetzer,Mrs. Banovitz,Heidi Stratton, and Michelle ( School Psycologist) I was told that my child has all the symptoms pointing towards ADD/ADHD- there I sat, baffled, shocked and beside myself, I turned to Aaron and started to cry. He looked at me,handed me kleenex and hugged me and said that we will make things work. As a parent you never want to hear that your child is not making progress and that school is too challenging.
That day Aaron Jetzer's advocacy for my child went into warp speed, he changed the way I thought. He made sure that the IEP was in place and follows up with me every week. My son loves his new class he attends twice a week and his progress between Mrs. Banovitz,Mrs. Lane, Heidi Stratton has shown proven results. So for the parents to say the teachers are like robots you are sorely mistaken. I would like to remind all of our parents that Village View Elementary School is a public school and answers to Ocean View School District. The district makes the rules and as a administrator he must enforce them.
He is a believer in rules and by all means all our children in todays society need them.
In life as adults there are rules we all have to follow or there are consequences and the same goes in school. School's have always been a place to learn and watch your child blossom, they have always had rules and those who have challenged authority never win.
I believe that Mr. Jetzer,All the wonderful teachers, Mr. Everett, librarian, music & pe teachers, clerical staff,Nurse Shelly,Special Ed teachers,Speech,Resource,Noon Duty Supervisors,Parent Volunteers,PTA make up the most amazing school community I have ever witnessed. I wish that the parents who are focused on all that he's done wrong, might put themselves in his shoes. Oh, thats what I thought pretty big shoes to fill. Bottom line is, in life there are people you are not going to like, and situations you can't change but what does badmouthing a person make you gain?
I invite all you not so happy parents to come in and work in the school, read the district rules, seem the happy faces when a child gets there birthday card from Mr. Jetzer,or how excited they are when they win the spirit trophy, or lets remember all the times he pops in classes and helps students, answers questions and solves problems.
I wish you all well and hope that instead of being negative you turn your energy positive and move onto a school that you find suitable, because this school does not need parents like you.

Realize something, your children are there to learn, and the teachers are there to teach and Mr. Jetzer is there to guide all the wonderful staff and wonderful students!! Life is what you make it, stop complaining and hiding behind a blog, be a man address the issues without this fake ass facade. I will tell you if I'm not happy with something in my child's education, I step in and make decisions to benefit the best interest of my children!!
Maybe you should check into a district transfer so you can go to the next school and critique it and tear down there principal, teachers, and devoted parents.
Pretty soon you might turn the parents into your own robotic procurement devices!!
I say to you good riddens and goodnite!!

  19. Sorry I know that this blog’s intent is to discuss the challenges at VV that are affecting us all and not to discuss IEP’s and Resource a truly District issue limited to those who have kids in Resource but the opportunity has presented itself I promise not to divert from the topic again but hear we go….

To “Village View Involved Parent “... “I feel for you and your child. You both have a long road ahead of you …. I have gone through thee years of IEP’s and two resource teachers both Pre and Post Jetzer. You are right Jetzer typifies the No Child Left behind Federal Funding Program. A Federal Act that can (by the Departments of Educations own admission) if implemented poorly reduce instruction and student learning, lower achievement goals and incentives teachers to "teach to the test”. A recent 2008 study from the Department of Education concluded that the Reading First Program, a major billion dollar a year NCLB effort, has proven “ineffective."
And just incase you don’t know your child and mine are now in an official federal Subgroup within NCLB. A subgroup that creates a “Safe Harbor “for Village View School. Our children’s poor Assessment/test scores no longer affect the schools rating; not yet anyway for your child new to the subgroup. When children initially get placed in a subgroup; it basically resets the clock so to speak for the child’s Adequate Yearly Progress. AYP determines ranking which effects funding…. Well you get the idea. The school Staff and Administration now have room to breathe, figure out how to keep the vast majority of these kids sit still and test better. The misguided effort going into teaching kids to test better never really gets to the heart of true learning disabilities. This type of approach focuses on getting the bulk of students threw the system within the margin of error of the Federal AYP. Check out a recent article in the Washington Post about subgroups. “A school that repeatedly fails under the No Child Left Behind law, even because of a single test score, "could eventually end up in restructuring, which might call for a new principal, a new staff and so on," http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/04/06/AR2008040601998.html
Although Mr. Jatzer did not start the “teach to test” mentality at VV he defiantly has exasperated it. His knowledge of how the system works and what he has to accomplish in-order to get his funding and a high rating is impressive. Do I think Jatzer is a Monster that only looks to protect his job at my child’s expense ….No I do not. However he definitely works the system to His and the schools advantage. My issues with the effectiveness of RTI and resource at VV have not come up until now because it has little to do with what is wrong with VV these days and more to do with the district.

“Village View Involved Parent “... As a final point please read the early post from a VV alumni (from its first graduating class apparently) found on this site under “the view from hear” April 19 2009 5: 04. Although my current child at VV does not have ADD/ADHD I have gone through that same issue with my son (currently in high school) when he was at VV. I strongly encourage you to seek an evaluation outside the district. I truly empathize with what you have just begun to go through. I sincerely hope in the end both our children excel at Village View. It saddens me that another mother is going through a similar experience and the same feelings that I have gone through and that we must meet this way… instead of meeting casually at school… relating our shared experiences as we watch the kids playing and visiting on the playground before school starts as had been the cases for many years… for many parents here at Village View.

That being said “moving on “how narrow minded. I have no intention of leaving VV a school and where I have been a member of the PTA for 9 years, where I have volunteered my time in the classroom and at home 7 of those years (in the classroom three days a week for a full year just recently!) simply because I have opposition to policies you find acceptable. In fact this school needs all types of parents with varied perspectives.

Please do not feel sorry for me or my child because we have a IEP, I am thrilled that my child is no longer behind and is testing higher and higher every week. I also chose to take my child to our pediatrician to have him evaluate the concerns and the tests showed the same spectrum as the district testing.
Just so you know a IEP is a school issue, does it not occur on campus? Please do not down grade my concerns because they aren't on your agenda. Is there something wrong with recieving funding that could help our school?
My bottom line is my children are safe, happy, bright and very well rounded and I cannot attribute all that success to myself afterall the school and parenting is a partnership that more people should appreciate.

You are boorish and your post only server to to show how clumsy some adults logic can be. Have you no decency ? You claim the right that “if I'm not happy with something in my child's education, I step in and make decisions to benefit the best interest of my children!!” And yet you would deny VV parents that are “not happy with something in their child's education” the very right you claim for yourself ? This is the definition of Fascism and your logic that of despots.
And as far as being a MAN ......you clearly know nothing about being man. How could you you are still a child you wrote ..“After speaking with many teachers today regarding this website” so....you run and tattle to the teacher and demand that only only the good-boys and girls be allowed to play at your school. Take a lesson form your beloved Mr. Jetzer don't tattle : )

I never said I felt sorry for you and your child only empathy (the ability to understand and share the feelings of another).
I am glad you went out side the school for a second opinion and i am truly happy for you and your son.
I am sorry you feel I was down grading your concerns that was not my intent.
Many things on campus are district driven Including the IEP implementation . The mere fact that the IEP happens on campus dose not mean that its school driven. The school follows the rules set down to them by the district which gets it from the State which must comply with the Federals minimum standards.

And let me be clear about MY agenda to all. It is to make sure that my Children get a solid education and still have fun at school. Is it that implausible to you that while they are being educated they are allowed the freedom to be a kid? Is it really beyond your imagination to consider that what is working for you might not be working for someone else? No one is saying that it is “my way or the highway” that is currently in disagreement with Jetzer’s approach …only those of you that support his “structure “are saying this. You have nothing to fear from our decent with Jetzer. If our concerns were even acknowledged by Jetzer this bolg would end. And if by chance OUR view’s gain momentum and things do start to change, I will gladly listen to you and do all I can to make sure your voice is heard.

    PS
I really do miss the information and the ability to share experiences that were frequently exchanged on campus during drop off.

Though I could waste my time breaking down the comments here, the writer has unfortunately decided to show their anger through unacceptable words, given the possibility that children could read this blog. If that is the way you handle your children at home, keep it there. I urge the rest of you to exercise restraint, regardless of your disagreements. Thanks!

  26. If your children are having problems then perhaps the blame lies on you, the parent, rather than the school itself. Or on JUST the school.

It reeks of laziness and naivety, frankly, to sit and blame everyone else for whatever problem your children may be having, take a look in the mirror and consider that possibility.

As for the school, it's fine. Many decent and noble people work very hard to provide a quality education not just for your child but the hundreds of others that attend the school at this time. The fact that you have singled out and senselessly attacked some of the teachers/workers is not surprising but it is pathetic and just proves the old-but-not-really-so-old adage of "Internet + Anonymity = Jerk".

Your slandering aside (and it was slander, and you know it, proven by the fact that you've since removed the comment in question), if you do not like how the school is run then perhaps you SHOULD transfer your child to another school, a magical one without any flaws and that has struck perfection, between Gumdrop Lane and Unicorn Ave. Or you could get offline and rather than sitting here on a blog complaining you could go off and actually enhance your child's life yourself

  27. Wow, You poor, poor sad little man! You try to present yourself as an intelligent, well traveled, articulate person with a shoe fetish. When in all actuality you are angry, misinformed,& cowardly and have obviously never spent more than a few minutes on campus to actually get the facts or lend a hand in making the environment better for our kids! Show up in a place where you can be helpful and accountable, quit your monday morning quarterbacking and be the change you want to see in your environment, then you can bitch!!

  28. To Anonymous posted april 26 3:30 pm, you're an idiot. If you don't like the blog you don't have to read it. It obviously does not suit you. You know nothing about the author and yet you're trying to insult him in a very base way. You're laughable, I laugh at you HA HA HA! Are you the only one who know's so much about the school, please... Your probably one of those cackling hens that waste all their time talking nonsense with all the other mother hens, holding up traffic etc.. Now I really might consider pulling the kids out of school if the children's metality is anything like what I've read on this. I don't want my kids around people who think and express themselves the way you just did. Hopefully the blog will be taken off beacuse responses like yours make me sick.

  29. As a parent of two children at Village View, I need to say that I am surprised at all the negativity. I transferred my girls to Village View at the beginning of this year because of the lack of discipline and the tolerance for bullying they experienced at their previous school. My daughters are extremely happy at VV. They love their teachers, Mrs. Munoz and Mrs. Engel. These teachers have inspired one of my daughters to become teachers and work hard. As to Mr. Jetzer, I am grateful that he has the guts to use his authority to promote good behavior. I agree with zero tolerance. If more schools weren't so afraid of "reactions" and more willing to do what is right instead of allowing kids to just do what they want, maybe our education system wouldn't be in such a mess. When a school doesn't have good discipline policies that the Administration enforces, then we see chaos and lack of education. I have done homeschooling. I have had my children in arts academies. I have had them in Montessori schools. I had them on an Indian Reservation school. I went to Catholic School all my life. I have taught in public schools since 1984 when I started my teaching career. So I have plenty of experience and I know we have it pretty good a Village View. If it doesn't work for some, that is understandable. Mr. Jetzer can't please everyone. His vision is to have the best school possible. My daughters just told me that they love it and that they can talk at lunch. They wanted me to state that many of these comments are just not true as far as what they have experienced. My daughters are at school to learn what they will need to know in order to succeed in the world...Reality check is that what most kids learn in our schools is not enough to compete with other countries. Just notice what is happening in our economy. If they can't perform the jobs, the companies will seek those who can. I am grateful for this school because it is providing a high level education for my daughters.
I personally would like to thank Mr. Jetzer and all the teachers who give their time so my daughters can become successful, responsible, courteous, service-minded adults.
